Savvy Travellers Travel Light!

Article written by Angela Jones.

For the next 5 or so weeks we are going to give you a firsthand guide to travelling to some of the world’s most desired destinations. But before handing over your passport and booking your spot by the hotel pool cocktail in hand, here are a few tips on what to bring and what not to bring when packing your suitcase.

How many times have you gone on vacation and packed what you thought was necessary only to realise you didn’t need half the contents in your suitcase? “Every time!” we hear you say, well read on and we’ll help you empty that suitcase fast.

Consider location, duration and purpose

The amount of luggage you pack is dependent on a number of factors; destination, length of time and circumstances for your visit e.g. If you’re planning on spending the week on a deserted island then leave your ski suit at home and learn to pack to wisely.

Minimize the amount of clothing packed

The bulk of your luggage is clothing so minimize by bringing less and washing more often. Pack whatever you plan to take then put half of it back. Most people tend to take far more clothing than is really necessary. Be careful to choose dark clothes that dry quickly and either don't wrinkle or look good wrinkled. Many travellers are concerned about appropriate dress so it’s always helpful to have a look at what the weathers like before jetting off.

Pack correctly

When packing a hard-sided suitcase, begin by putting all the heavy items like shoes and toiletry kits on the bottom before packing the rest of your clothes in. The best way to maximise space is to roll your clothing. First fold each item in half. Then simply roll. To minimize any creases, start on the bulkiest end of the article of clothing. Always remember to pack an empty trash bag in your suitcase. That way you can keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones.

Downside toiletries

Toiletries and first aid are important items to consider when packing for that vacation. These items can be bulky so it’s important to downsize from the regular full-size items (normal size bar of soap or a tube of toothpaste) to the travel/sample size or if not, then a smaller amount in an appropriately size container. Hint: If you are bringing anything which is a liquid, double wrap it in zip-lock bags to prevent leaks. In many parts of the world, toilet paper is not common so it’s always wise to bring some toilet paper on your journey, and keep a small amount with you at all times.

Read up on your destination

It’s always important to read up on your holiday destination, so pick up a travel book and acquaint yourself with its local culture and customs as other cultures may take offense to certain innocent and unassuming gestures. If you run out of time to do this prior to jetting off, be sure to do this on the plane and you may save yourself a lot of embarrassment or you may even learn a thing or two.

Last but not least enjoy your vacation!
